Agra needs no introduction as it is the city home to one of the seven wonders of the world and also most important monument in India ,the Taj Mahal. Apart from Taj Mahal the city also has two other UNESCO world heritage sites- Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Agra, the land of majestic monuments can be regarded as one of the gems of India.

A short history of Agra


The city of Agra has mystic past.The earliest reference of Agra comes from the epic, Mahabharat where it has been mentioned as Agrabana.The famous geographer ,Ptolmey marked this place as Agra in his map and from then it came to be known as Agra. Agra gained its historical importance when Sikandar Lodi ,the emperor of Lodi dynasty made Agra as his capital. Later Mughals also ruled from here from 1526- 1658 AD. Since then Agra remains to be a favourite travel destination because of its splendid monuments of Mughal period.

How to reach Agra


Agra is situated in the Northern state of Uttar Pradesh and nearest metropolitan to it is Delhi, being around 200 kms from here.Agra is well connected to rest part of the India through Air, Railways as well as Road.

Reaching Agra by Air-
Agra airport is mainly known by name of Kheria Airport.This airport mainly receives flights from domestic circle.some months back only Flights of indian airlines used to operate from here but now Kingfisher airlines has also started to operate from here.An international traveller has to first reach Indira Gandhi international airport in Delhi and from there they can get flights to Agra.

Reaching Agra by Train-
The main railway station of Agra is Agra Canntt which comes in many important routes like Delhi-Mumbai route, Delhi- Chennai route and some trains from Kolkata and other eastern cities also pass from here.So, you can get trains for Agra virtually from any part of India.Another important railway station is Agra Fort but it receives lesser number of trains than Agra Canntt.

Reaching Agra by Bus-
Several buses connect Agra from Delhi and places in nearby states.Most of the buses from other states reach at Idgah bus stand in Agra which lies about 10 kms from the Taj Mahal. Three national highways traverse Agra- National highway (NH)- 2 ,NH- 3 and NH- 11.

Other bus stands in Agra are-
Powerhouse bus stand ( Bijli Ghar bus stand)- 6 kms from Taj Mahal
New bus stand- 12 kms from Taj... It mainly receives buses from nearby states like , Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan etc.

Where to stay in Agra-

Being one of the most visited tourist place in India, agra has a number hotels which suits everyone's needs and pockets.Most of the budget hotels are located near Taj Mahal and near Dayal Bagh.An auto can leave you to these areas.

Mid range hotels are also readily available in Agra. One of the hotels named Laurie's hotel situated in Mahatma Gandhi road is said to be o british era.Although I personally haven't stayed here but people say that the service provided is remember them of british era.

Eating out in Agra-


There are numerous restaurants and cafes spread throughout the city of Agra.Most of the places are cheaper and serve north indian dishes.It is not difficult to find a budget restaurant with south indian and western dishes either.You can ask local people for a place to eat which suits your need.
